Mad Scientist

Art by Fernando Caire

Appearance and Physical Traits[]

Mad Scientists have the appearance of being prematurely aged with wrinkles, liver spots and hair standing out streaked with white. They can also have mechanical alterations such as a red lens in place of an eye or part of their skulls replaced which would show off the "St. Elmo’s fire" now burning over their pulsing brains.[1]

Socio-Cultural Characteristics[]

Mad Scientists prefer to turn doctors of any kind[2] and take charge whether others want them or not. They refer to other monster as their minions[3] and are always swearing vengeance on the world while getting pretty violent as a result. There is a "persistent rumor" that the first monster ever had been the mad scientist Oppenheimer, one of the creators of the atomic bomb, which Nick believes is the only reason they haven't been wiped out yet.[4]

Their room decor can be fairly bizarre featuring things such as a bed that is simply a pit filled with red Jell-O, a watermelon hung from the ceiling punctured by a dozen wires and a partially disassembled armature.[5]

The careers and hobbies of the mad scientist tend to focus on inventing whether that be creating a new line of trains for the city,[6] enlarging insects[7] and vegetables,[8] or bring back prehistoric creatures.[9]

Skills, Abilities and Weaknesses[]

Enhanced Intelligence: their intelligence allows them to create advanced technology out of anything,[10] they are considered the smartest monster.[11][12]

  • Madness: weakness, Their Intelligence comes coupled with a very trope-y form of madness that tends to overwhelm them.[13] This madness can manifests in a few way such as...
    • a tendency to always overlook one crucial detail (with the extent of their oversight varying).[14]
    • getting distracted by ranting.[15]
    • getting so lost in their own metaphors that what they create is functionally useless.[16]
    • not building any way to control their creations and having them go out of control.[17]

Conversion: they can turn humans into more Mad Scientists by rewiring their brains.[18]

Notable Mad Scientists[]

Trivia[]

  16. “Oh yes! Perhaps you remember my atomic pigeons!”[...] “The human resistance was down to eating crumbs! So I would make something to eat all the crumbs in the world!” […] “Wait, you designed giant pigeons to eat crumbs?” “Of course! It was a brilliant plan, though none of the others could see it. Kong called me mad, called me—” “But they were big.” […] “Well, yes. Kong is very big, but it is the mind that—” “No, the pigeons. They were big.” […] “Well, yes. You see, to eat more crumbs, I had to expand the stomach, and of course, if they were still to fly, I had to expand the wings, and by that time, it just became easier to make the whole bird larger.” “Right.” “And then, I would—” “Why not just make them… I know I’m not an expert or anything, but why not have them crave human flesh?” “For what?” “To eat?” […] “Pigeons eat crumbs,” he said clearly. - Fifty Feet of Trouble (Kindle Location 2604 -2620)
